In many situations, the mesh cannot be completely removed, thereby permanently jeopardizing a woman's health.
NEW FDA WARNING CONCERNING TRANSVAGINAL MESH PRODUCTS
On July 13, 2011, after receiving 2,874 complaints in the last three years from women who suffered serious complications from transvaginal mesh products, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an update to its 2008 Public Health Notification concerning the complications of transvaginal repair with mesh. Specifically, the FDA advised the public and medical community that (1) serious adverse events from transvaginal mesh products are NOT rare, contrary to what was stated in the 2008 Public Health Notification, and (2) transvaginally placed mesh in POP repair does NOT conclusively improve clinical outcomes over traditional non-mesh repair, and (3) transvaginal mesh surgery exposes women to greater risk than traditional non-mesh repair. The FDA is currently investigating the health problems associated with transvagainal mesh products, including device degradation, infection and vaginal wall erosion.
