Dislodged Wheel Kills Mother, Injures 5

At about 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 25th, a wheel came off a 2004 Dodge pickup headed northbound in on I-69 North northeast of Houston in the New Caney area. The wheel flew into the opposite southbound lanes and smashed through the windshield of an on-coming 2014 GMC pickup, instantly killing the driver, who was a mother.

The deceased woman’s truck then hit another vehicle carrying a father and three small children. All of the occupants of that car, as well as the deceased victim’s teenaged son were seriously hurt and taken by ambulance to area hospitals with extensive injuries. The man driving the pickup which lost the wheel managed to bring it to a stop without hitting any other vehicles.

The freeway was closed in both directions for three hours, but has since reopened. DPS troopers on the scene reported that the deceased mother was bringing her son home from basketball games in Lufkin. Initial reports did not indicate why the tire came loose and investigation of the tragedy continues.
